As part of their celebration for their 10th anniversary, one of the largest CPA firms in the country took a day to give back.
To celebrate the decade in business, UHY Advisors held their first annual UHY Cares Day — a day set aside to give employees the opportunity to lend a hand in the community by volunteering time and effort.
The Utica branch of UHY Advisors, who handle a number of automotive dealerships as clients, have independently held Cares Days as a way of thinking locally during the automotive struggles of the summer of 2009.
Dan Markey, managing partner of the Utica branch, called the national initiative of UHY Cares Day a complete success. “It was pretty amazing how well our people took to that,” he said. “They’re used to sitting at a desk in front of a computer and our people really, really worked hard that afternoon.”
During the afternoon of donating their time and other various materials, UHY Cares Day generated $650,000 to dozens of charities across the country.
On Oct. 22, the employees at UHY Advisors were joined by executives and retirees, about 60 in all, and bussed to St. Vincent de Paul in Utica, a thrift store, for the afternoon.
Several employees brought bags full of items they wished to donate that afternoon, as well as volunteering their time.
The employees spent their time their opening donated bags and organizing the items before putting them up front to be displayed.
“We know there are a lot of needy families in Macomb County,” Markey said. “And this is where we operate, so we like our charitable dollars to stay here. And St. Vincent de Paul was a very gracious, charitable host.”
The idea of the national version of UHY Cares Day came from Rick David, UHY Advisors’ chief operating officer.
