Discovery from unstructured data sources, like the files from a desktop or laptop computer, is pretty standard today, thanks to numerous advances in technology that allow for quick and easy collection, rapid processing, and hosted review. With that said, rarely do litigants understand the potential value and value of discovery from database-driven applications (structured data). As the technology we all use becomes more and more complex, many of the applications we use have databases "lurking" behind the scenes, whether we know it or not. Sales people use CRM systems to track their activity, the CFO relies upon an ERP system for tracking financial and inventory information, and your HR department uses an HRIS system to organize critical information for individual employees - all of which are unstructured data. This CLE will help legal professionals understand the basics of database-driven systems, how to ask whether there may be a database with potentially relevant information, and ultimately how to get data out in a meaningful format for review, or even production to the other side.
