CASE STUDY #9
Southeast Asian Investigation for a Large Religious Pension Fund
Through a U.S. Law Firm
The client was considering whether to invest in certain cross-border transactions. In this instance, the fund was evaluating several high-profile opportunities in China.
UHY Advisors team members were retained to perform detailed background and reputation checks on the Chinese investment vehicles and on the individuals who were promoting the investment opportunities. The investigation involved discreet and confidential inquiries with law enforcement sources and industry and business leaders in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Philippines.
UHY Advisors team members determined that the main figure behind these deals was directly connected to certain groups implicated in illegal activities. These groups were considered by local law enforcement personnel to be associated with Asian organized crime, and involved in gambling and other illicit businesses. As a result, our client decided not to invest with this group.
